More About Me
I am a technologist turned neuroscientist, turned entrepreneur, turned certified coach.
My 38-year international career has spanned government, academic, non-profit and private sectors.
Experience
Speaking
An experienced international speaker, my expertise lies in attention, cognitive neuroscience and coaching, as well as volunteer management, networking and community-building. I have delivered numerous presentations across Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.
Coaching
I am a Certified Professional Coach and Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner. I trained with the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. I am a member of the International Coaching Federation and European Mentoring and Coaching Council.
Project & Team Management
I have over 20 years’ experience managing diverse projects and multicultural teams of staff and volunteers. I have been a formal or informal mentor in all sectors I have worked in. I understand that empathy is the vital characteristic needed in leadership and within teams.
Neuroscience of Attention
My specialism in human attention began during my PhD in computational neuroscience in the UK (1999-2005). I developed a model of visual attention that explains brain processes in healthy people and those with brain injury. This computer simulated "brain" was able to:
-
precisely replicate electrical firing patterns seen in individual neurons as they adapt to the attentional requirements of the current task
-
behave like a human i.e. its simulated eye movement patterns matched those seen in humans when we allocate our attention, for example to search for an object in a scene
During 2006-11, I conducted post-doctoral research in Canada, combining my computational modelling with behavioural experiments and MRI neuroimaging (function MRI & diffusion tensor imaging) in healthy people and patients.
-
This enabled me to examine the brain processes and connectivity, or brain “wiring”, involved in attention.
Neuroinformatics
Neuroinformatics is the field at the intersection of neuroscience and informatics: "big data" for brain research. I moved to Sweden in 2011 and became the first female Executive Director of the leading international neuroinformatics organisation, INCF, which brings together scientists from around the world to develop common solutions for neuroscience data, to advance brain research.
Software Engineering
My early career (1988-2006) was spent in software engineering, working in the UK Government, where I led software development teams and projects, and participated in e-Government task forces, including presenting in both houses of UK Parliament in the early years of government services being moved online.
Entrepreneurship
In 2020, while living in Sweden, I was inspired to become an entrepreneur and co-found Serendipitea, a company that provided artisanal and medicinal teas and supported women through various life stages.
Gender Equality
I have a lifelong commitment to gender equality and the elevation of women in the workforce and society. I am a former Director of the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST), where I created the SCWIST Volunteer Program, and former volunteer adviser to the Professional Women’s Network - Global. I've worked in the Equility, Diversity & Inclusion team at the University of Exeter on an inclusive staff recruitment project, and as part of the project team delivering the first Gender Equality conference at the University.
